Bakery recovery

Soda bread and strawberry squares (adapted).

~

It's been a busy crafty week at rue Niellon (see the two previous posts, and the two next ones...).  Deciding to cook bread and cake as well could have backfired and left me with a too-much-domesticity hangover. Fortunately, however, the weighing and mixing and stirring made a pleasant change from measuring and cutting and sewing - and the smells as they baked didn't hurt either. Nor, needless to say, did the eating (damage to the waistline excepted).

Suitably nourished, I've recovered my energy for the next lot of projects from the perma-queue of ideas.

A crown, a frock and a cake

On her third birthday, L came home from the creche with a paper birthday crown. It was nice and hung around being dressed up in for a bit, and then, as these things do, went in the recycling bin - unnoticed by our busy big three year old girl.

What I didn't realise then though was that some people have a whole tradition of birthday crowns. Soulemama is one of them; polkadotjes is another. Turns out that when G was a kid he got a crown on his birthdays too. And I cottoned on to the whole idea just in time to make this:

The night before the big day I hung it in her room with her matching mummy-made birthday dress, leaving this lot stacked up in the kitchen while the cake cooled overnight:

Up at the crack of dawn the next day, and overdoing the sugar as much as possible...

Those few moments of true peace and quiet before the others wake up are one of my favourite times of day - and  I honestly can't think of many things I'd rather do with them than decorate chocolate cake for my big little L.

And then she got up and screamed with pleasure at her dress and her crown and wore them both, of course, all day:

This is the stillest she would stand with them both on simultaneously. So we did some posing this morning, a couple of weeks later, as well:

As you can see, it's just perfect for twirling!

And I think I've started a birthday tradition of our own. Crowns and party clothes, homemade with lots of love, by me.

cake+tea

With thanks (especially from my lucky, cake-loving colleagues) to J for the book of French vocab-increasing recipe fabulousness, and to L for the pretty silicone cupcake cases.

Yum yum yum!

Christening cake

T got baptised the other week. This is the cake I made for him (and the rest of us!):

What with the dove I lovingly crafted in icing, bad puns have been rolling around my head about this "cake of peace" being a "piece of cake"...

It was quite yummy.

Pre-Christmas crafting bender

Amid all the Christmas shopping, planning and cooking dinner for 13, I managed to make these things for my friends. I don't really think they look that impressive given what an achievement it felt like to get them all done in time! But it was nice to give them - and I will learn to take better photos...

Heat therapy bags filled with rice, for those who need a bit of pampering to soothe aches and pains and general pregnancy discomfort. I made these folllowing this tutorial on Sew Mama Sew.

Tin can lanterns for L and J's garden, from the crafty bit in the Guardian.

Flea market crockery stuck together into a stand for fabulous H's fabulous cakes.

Mugs by L and T for their godparents, done with a painting kit from the wonderful Hema.

It was all rather addictive - I fear no-one will ever get a present bought from a shop again.
